Production companies that choose to bring their projects to the sunshine state will find that Florida’s sales tax exemption for productions can make budgets stretch further than normal. Those engaged in the production of motion pictures, made for television motion pictures, television series, commercial advertising, music videos or sound recordings may be eligible for a ‘sales and use’ tax exemption that will save them an extra 7.5% at the cash register. There is no minimum spend necessary to qualify, so low- and micro-budget films can take advantage of the exemption as well. Applying is as simple as filling out an online application.

Some expenditures, such as lodging, don’t qualify for the sales tax exemption. Instead, productions can take advantage of the many deals offered through Florida’s “Discounts and Deals” program. The program provides information on discounts offered by hotels, production services, and other vendors all over the state of Florida. Vendors participate on a voluntary basis, because they value the positive impact productions have on the state and welcome the opportunity to provide them with their services.
